subject: charity
Any good case for support tries to answer three key questions:
- Why Care?
- Why Us/Me/Them?
- Why Now?
With all the blogs out there dedicated to charities, fundraising, marketing, social media and so on why should you read mine? Here’s my case.
why: care
Charities exist to meet the social needs of our world. Poverty. Homelessness. Education. Health. Climate change. And the list goes on. In their simplest forms, business exists to maximize shareholder wealth and government exists to establish and protect the rights of its citizens. Charities then fill the void between them. Charities attempt to address our basic human needs (shelter, food, water and belonging/love) in a variety of ways yet we care so little about them as we devote just a fraction of our resources to helping them flourish. This needs to, and must, change if we are going to actually see some of the great global needs ended, resolved, advanced, established and protected.
why: me/us/re: charity
In a word; change. The content centers around best practices (things that have stood the test of time), emerging thought (things that will stand the test of time) and commentary of what’s wrong (things that are still around and should not be). The writers are educated and experienced in charity issues but possess a youthful and rebellious stance attempting to push forward, to change charity, to re-charity.
why: now
Our world is in a unique place. We not only are starting to ask the right questions; Why is half of our world still living in poverty? How are we going to protect the future of our world’s ecosystem? If we have enough food to feed billions why do 25,000 die every day due to hunger? But the next generation’s motivation, the constant emergence of technology and the easier access to previously remote parts of the world are capable of providing some of the answers! But we need to act now. Ecosystems are being destroyed. Husbands, women, children are dying of preventable causes. Wars are being waged, fairly or not, and death is following them. Charity has a role to play in providing the solutions to these issues but only smart, sustainable and successful charity.
